Concert Review

Attend one rock or pop concert and write a short paper in response to the concert. It can be a “big name” band or performer or something in a local club or coffee house. What should this paper include? Use the following as a guideline: State the name of the group or individual artist and the date, time and place of the concert. Keep track of the songs and the order in which they were played (and what strategy, if any, went into the design of the set order). Comment on the level of virtuosity.  (How good was it?  Were the performers good musicians or better performers?) Describe the visual aspect of the concert. (Where was it held?  What was the room or auditorium like?) What was the atmosphere in the audience?  (Describe the mood of the crowd.) How did the performers draw in and involve the audience? What differences were there between the music performed live verses recorded versions of the music (if applicable)? What was your subjective reaction to the pieces and the performance?  (What did you think of it?)

Country and western

You will research one of the following categories of  21st century music. You’ll need to do a lot of research, and you’ll need to cite your sources. (You will be expected to use at least 5 different sources for your research. You will write an essay on one of the following styles of music: 1. Rock and roll 2. Country and western 3. Rap (TOPIC FOR THE ESSAY) 4. Ska 5. Broadway Bear in mind that many of these groups will have several sub-groups to them–for example, where would “Hip hop” or “Heavy Metal” or or “Punk” or “Bluegrass” fit? If you can think of a genre other than these that you’d like to write a lesson on, you can ask me about it, but for the most part students will be expected to write a lesson on one of these four. You should include the origins and/or history of the music; discuss melody, harmony, rhythm, tone color, dynamics, and texture; identify the different sub-categories; highlight major composers or performers; recognize any specific audience the music is intended for; and select at least three songs to illustrate the things you’ve noted about the music, explaining how each song shows the characteristics of the style. Cover whatever you feel you need to in order to give a good survey of the style, and be sure to compare or contrast the style to the other music we’ve studied.  If you can provide links to the music you use as examples that would be wonderful, but this is not required. Make certain you’ve listened to your examples yourself. Remember to listen to the music critically.

History of the Electric Guitar

You must take into account that the reader is totally uninformed on your topic.   Start with the history and absolute beginnings and origins of your topic.   Omit opinions and concentrate on facts. This is not an editorial.   Research it using ONLY the Internet. This is an Internet assignment!   Do not plagiarize information (cut & paste) or “quote” excerpts from web sites.   A clear sign of plagiarism is writing proficiency and word usage that are beyond the obvious skill level of the student in question. DO NOT use words you normally don’t use.   Use portions of information and translate it using your own words.   Use essay format, i.e., – introduction – introduce topic, purpose & subjects to be covered. – body – research facts, history, chronology, laws, statistics, pictures, charts. – conclusion – wrap up and closing remarks. – what the future holds, impact on society.   Maximum 2 pages of word-processed, double-spaced text equivalent.   Use font size 10-12.  include a bibliography of the web sites used. Gender in folkloric

DNCE 303 Midterm Research Project Fall 2020 Research Paper Guidelines: Part of the goal of this class is to broaden your dance horizons by introducing you to Mexican folklórico dance and its contemporary issues, as well as the range of currently choreographing and performing dance companies and choreographers. To that end, this option is dedicated to your exploration of who is dancing folklórico right now, what issues are prominent and how these contemporary choreographers envision their world through folklórico dance. The result will be a 4-6-page paper (with a works cited page) analyzing a folklórico choreographer or folklórico dance company using the critical frameworks explored in one of the modules covered in this class (e.g. race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, or ritual). REQUIREMENTS: 1. This paper must be 4-6 pages long (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12pt font.) This page requirement does NOT include title page or works cited. 2. You may include some photos if you so choose, but the use of photos is not included in the page length requirement. 3. You must cite at least 3 sources, not including sources for visual supports. These are scholarly sources such as journal articles, book chapters, and books, NOT Wikipedia or .com websites. You may use up to 2 sources from our class materials. 4. You are welcome but not required to write in the first person (I, me). 5. PROOFREAD. Then proofread again; typographical, grammatical, and spelling errors will affect your grade. 6. If you borrow specific words or phrases from a text, they must be put in quotation marks. • In brief, use parenthetical citations for all quotations or other references (author and page number) in the body of the text. For example: RIGHT: As Jowitt notes, “Description at its best is not simply about surface” (9). WRONG: As Jowitt notes, “Description at its best is not simply about surface.” (9). WRONG: Jowitt notes, “Description at its best is not simply about surface.” (9) RIGHT: The dance “has always held violent potential” (Browning 168). WRONG: The dance “has always held violent potential,” (Browning 168). 7. Use a “Works Cited” format where you list at the end of the essay all of the works you’ve cited. 8. Standard formatting is required. That means that papers must be typed, double-spaced, 1-inch margins on ALL sides, 12-point font, in Times New Roman ONLY. Do not add extra spaces between paragraphs. Use a separate cover page for all header information and begin the body of your paper at the top of the next page. Cover pages are not included in the page requirement. 1 DNCE 303 Midterm Research Project Fall 2020 EXAMPLE: Here is an EXAMPLE of the format of a formal paper (You do not have to format your project exactly this way): Title Page: Your name, course, date, title of your paper Introduction a. Basic description of the dancer, dance work, or dance company you chose to analyze. b. Your THESIS. I believe the ……. of this dance company shows meaning through (this is one example- theses can be written many ways!) Body (3-4 well developed ideas should be sufficient for this project; you may choose to use more, as long as you meet the length requirements of at least 4 pages but no more than 6. Please remember to back up your analyses with what you see in the dance or dance works.) Conclusion a. Reiterate your thesis and how the ideas presented show your interpretation of meaning in the specific dance work. Works cited 2
