Clean Water Act

Your friend, an 8th-grade earth science teacher at the local middle school, is organizing an Earth Day celebration for his students and their families. He knows you have recently been learning about environmental policies in this environmental science class and has asked you to be one of several guest speakers at the event. He would like you to explain to the students how scientific research and public awareness of an environmental issue led to an environmental policy or law. The goal is for the 8th-grade students to understand how people and communities (scientific community, government bodies, citizens of a country, etc.) can effect positive change for the environment. Address the following in your presentation: Summarize the environmental issue. What are its causes? What are the effects on the environment and people? Consider multiple perspectives and locations, as applicable. Explain how economics and/or personal lifestyle choices or behaviors are related to this issue. Describe how individuals, communities, and/or governments have worked to address the issue. Examine the impact of relevant legislation or initiatives. What are the benefits? Have there been any consequences? Note: Remember your audience; the presentation needs to make sense and appeal to 13- and 14-year-old students.

Renewable and Non-Renewable Fuels

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:  In this discussion, you will have an opportunity to make connections between your prior knowledge and the new content you are learning this week. Use your results from this week’s “Build Your Proficiency” Diagnostic to provide context for your prior knowledge and consider the new content about fossil fuels and energy resource management to answer the following questions:  What are the sources, uses, and any problems associated with 1) fossil, 2) nuclear, and 3) renewable fuels? How did your results from the “Build Your Proficiency” Diagnostic reflect an understanding, or lack of understanding, about this content? How has your understanding changed this week?

1) Research any TWO of the following environmental issues: how gases contribute to global climate change, how pollutants cause acid rain, any specific water pollution issue, wastewater treatment, atmospheric ozone depletion, fossil fuel combustion and emissions, electricity production from nuclear power, photovoltaic energy. Explain the chemistry behind the issue (make sure to include at least two different vocabulary terms for each issue (for a total of 4) and underline them). Explain how an understanding of chemistry is essential for understanding the issue. How does your description of each issue demonstrate the first law of thermodynamics? How does your description of each issue demonstrate the second law of thermodynamics? IT NEEDS TO ONLY BE ONE PAGE

Environmental Problem In Jacksonville Florida

Each student will pick a topic on Florida, conduct research on that topic, and compose a term paper presenting the results of that research. Any topic on Florida or the Environment, or any topic that is somehow connected to the Florida and the Environment, is acceptable and the list of potential subjects is infinite, but importantly I will not pick the topic for you.The submission of the topic should include the subject title and a short explanation your research intentions. I will provide an Assignment Link for you to submit your term paper title. While no subject on the Middle East is out of bounds, many of your research topics will be denied primarily because they will be far too broad.  Students should THINK when choosing their topics, narrow the subject, and be precise.   The paper must be: 1)  Submitted as a Microsoft Word Document attached onto the Term Paper Assignment Link in Week 8 which I will create. 2)  Short, not less than 5 pages and no longer than 7 pages.   3)  Double spaced with 1 inch margins top, bottom, and sides.   4)  Use Times New Roman and 12 point font. 5)  Have a List of References at the end of the paper with 8 sources, 4 of which cannot be from the internet. 6)  The reference and citations will use Chicago Style Manual format. 7)  The citations in the body of the paper will use scientific, parenthetical, citations (not footnotes or endnotes).   8)  Simple instructions for the overall guidelines for references and citations are attached to the Course Information Tab on the Jacksonville University Blackboard website for this course.

Global Warming

Global Warming and climate Change Global climate has long been a topic of debate.  New reports are coming out that suggest human activities are NOT causing global warming.  The publication “Scientific American” in June 2003 reports: “Greenhouse skeptics, pro-industry groups and political conservatives have seized on the results, proclaiming that the science of climate change is inconclusive and that agreements such as the Kyoto protocol, which set limits on the output of industrial heat-trapping gases, are unnecessary.  But mainstream climatologist, as represented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), are perturbed that the report has received so much attention; they say the study’s conclusions are scientifically dubious and colored by politics.”  What is your viewpoint on humans impacting global warming? Do you think human activities are part of the cause, or is this more of a media hype?  Take some time and review scientific and political reports and your textbook.  Then use the information you come across to back up your view point in a two-page essay.  Be sure to include the significance of this issue to Environmental Science and the concepts you learned this semester.  Your report should be Times New Roman, 12 font, 1’ margins (top, bottom/left, right), cover page, and include a reference list of your source(s). Upload to the “Assignments” section below by the due date.
